COMMENTARY: THE GUNAS

The gunas are the underlying forces responsible for the continual process of change that is always at work within the realm of nature and the senses. Rajas and tamas account for the two opposing forces of outward, externalizing movement and internal contractive movement that are expressed at all levels of nature from the mental and emotional realm all the way to the densest aspect of the physical world. Sattva guna is the balance between them, a dynamic point of homeostasis in a changing landscape that allows us access to the greater intelligence that governs this changing landscape.

2.16 Heyam dukham anagatam

Suffering that has not yet come to fruition as experience can be avoided.

2.17 Drastr drsyayoh samyogo heya hetuh

From the point of view of samadhi, there is no separation between the experiencer and the object being experienced, there is just the pure power of experiencing. But from the point of view of avidya, the mind identifies itself as the experiencer and thinks it is the one having the experience. So one avoids the suffering inherent in all experience when one avoids identifying with the mind’s understanding of itself as separate ego.
